Observation Narrative
The vegetation of this plot is typical of that of the wettest portion of Folly Mills Fen, just beyond the base of the wooded limestone slope. No surface springs are evident, but this wetland undoubtedly receives calcareous seepage from the adjacent upland. Some surficial flow proceeds northeastward; an outlet into Folly Mills Creek is apparent near the house of Robert Mueller, the landowner. A visit to this site later in the growing season is needed to confirm the hydrology as seasonally rather than semipermanently flooded. This calcareous spring marsh / muck fen supports one of only three known extant populations of Menyanthes trifoliata in Virginia. The grazing activity that is clearly detrimental to the adjacent wet prairie / prairie fen community appears nonexistent in or at least minimally deleterious in this stand. Stand size estimated at ca. 0.5 ha.
From Quercus velutina at base of slope south of fen: 18 m @ 169 deg to corner 4.
